Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki

New construction

Architecture: Steven Holl

Products used: Bent Lundell Profile

Kiasma museum is one of the landmark buildings in the heart of Helsinki.

Due to the Finnish weather circumstances the form of the building was known to be challenging already under construction in 1997. Several renovations and repairs had to be done through the years by removing the steel profiles and reusing them.

American architect Steven Holl won first prize in the 1993 architectural design competition from a total of 516 entries. Kiasma opened to the public in 1998.

Steven Holl has said: “I’m not interested in how a building will look when it’s published in a magazine. I’m interested in what it will be like to be in, what it feels like to walk through, how it will appear and work in the city.”
